Treat people how you want to be treated. That was engrained in my head at a very young age, and I now say it to my children everyday. It baffles me how many people don’t follow that in their personal and professional lives.
Let’s talk RESPECT. Is it gone? Kids yell at their parents, adults scream at other children at sporting events and employees roll their eyes at their bosses. I’ve seen it all and frankly, I’m fed up.
I recently received an email that literally made me say every swear in the book. My Irish temper was taken to a whole new level. The level of disrespect was unbelievable. I’ve been taught to respect your friends, your family, your business associates….everyone. Well, I guess that’s the not the case with everyone.
From Hollywood stars to athletes, we’re seeing people with disrespectful attitudes and behaviors…and it seems to be acceptable. People talk about it, but nothing is changing.
Deborah Norville’s wrote a book called “The Power of Respect.” In here book she states some not so surprising numbers.
- 79% of people say lack of respect is a serious problem
- 60% say rude and selfish behavior is increasing
- 58% have encountered aggressive drivers
So where do we go from here? How can teach adults that they need to not only have respect, but common courtesy? Remember, our children learn from adults. So if the adults don’t change the way they are acting, we are on a vicious cycle.
Now, not everyone is like this. For the most part, there are really good people out there. I surround myself with them everyday. I just want to understand why some folks think that how they act is okay?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you think respect is gone? Will things ever change? Please send us your comments!
